Manchester United have worn more genuinely iconic shirts than almost any club in world football: kits tied to European Cups, first titles in a generation, and the most dramatic Champions League final anyone can remember. This is where we're building the full history of Manchester United's most iconic shirts, one at a time. Here are five to start with.
1968: The European Cup Final shirt
United's home red clashed with Benfica's own red at Wembley on 29 May 1968, so United wore blue instead for the biggest match in the club's history to that point. George Best scored a solo goal in extra time, Brian Kidd scored on his 19th birthday, and Bobby Charlton scored twice, the second in the 99th minute, as United won 4-1 to become the first English club to lift the European Cup, exactly ten years after the Munich air disaster. Shirts didn't carry manufacturer or sponsor branding in this era; the significance is entirely in what it was worn for.

1992-93: The first title in 26 years
United's first season back with Umbro after twelve years in Adidas, sponsored by Sharp, and the shirt worn when the club finally ended a 26-year wait for the English top-flight title in the inaugural Premier League season, won by ten points from Aston Villa. Eric Cantona arrived from Leeds for £1 million in late November with United as low as 10th in the table; by May they were champions. The away shirt from this season, in bright blue with an abstract black pattern and an oversized tonal crest, is one of the most recognisable Cantona-era shirts in circulation.

1995-96: The grey away shirt Ferguson scrapped at half-time
United's Umbro away shirt for 1995-96 lasted one half of one match. 3-0 down at Southampton, Ferguson sent his players out for the second half in a different kit entirely, reportedly because they couldn't pick each other out against the crowd. It was never worn again, and United won the Double that season regardless.
1998-99: The Treble shirt
Umbro's red home shirt for the Treble season, sponsored by Sharp, on the pitch for the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and two stoppage-time goals from Sheringham and Solskjaer at Camp Nou that beat Bayern Munich to complete English football's first Treble. The commemorative version, embroidered with all three trophies won around the crest, is the most sought-after Manchester United shirt in the vintage market.
2007-08: The Moscow final shirt
Nike's shirt for United's Ballon d'Or-winning Ronaldo season, worn in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. The game finished 1-1 after extra time and United won 6-5 on penalties, with the official final-edition shirt embroidered "Final Moscow 2008 21st May, Luzhniki Stadium" on the front.
